A charity drive is aiming to propel a traditional song from Palestine to the top of the UK charts. The project hopes to provide aid to Gaza's residents while also showcasing Palestinian cultural expression.
An Opportunity for Solidarity and an "Unlikely Coup"
Renowned figure Brian Eno, who performs on the track, stated that the song titled Lullaby represents a opportunity to show solidarity with Palestinians this festive season. He noted the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“It would be fantastic if that came to pass, yes,” he stated. “I’m not gonna be completely let down if it fails to, holiday tracks are a thing unto themselves.”
Powerful Theme of Self-Determination
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who performs on the reimagining of a folk song called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the piece's powerful central theme.
“It occupies a profound significance for a lot of people,” Barghouti shared. “The message is that I would choose to perish with honor than exist without freedom. That’s the main theme of the song; we want to live a respectful existence that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
Production History and Star-Studded Lineup
The track was produced following a solidarity show held in September. Initially planned to be performed and recorded live, the piece was omitted from the lengthy event due to scheduling overruns.
The notable list of performers contributing to Lullaby includes a range of well-known figures from the music world. All were part of the September show, which managed to collect a significant sum for relief efforts.
Creation and Launch
Lullaby was produced by a trio of producers and composers. The single features a combination of the traditional Arabic lyrics with freshly written English words.
The organizers behind the project have clarified that their aim is to generate maximum funds for a specific fund. These donations will be distributed to initiatives supporting Palestinians through an non-profit partner.
“We don’t have a specific target,” a representative explained. “We aim for the maximum achievable. Obviously, the higher the total, the greater the impact. It all goes out to those in need in Gaza.”
The reality in the territory was characterized as its widespread damage, with a vast majority of infrastructure said to be destroyed or damaged.
“Against that backdrop, a handful of millions doesn’t make an enormous impact. But I think what does make a difference is above all spreading knowledge of this plight and showing there’s another side to the story.”
The song is launching on Friday. Additionally, a full recording of the charity concert will be made available for streaming on a popular streaming site from the 19th of December.
