Former British Serviceman Charged of Murdering Kenya Female Shows Up in Courtroom
An individual has appeared in court as deportation processes commenced in the investigation of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan national, a Kenyan woman who was killed near a British forces camp in 2012.
Purkiss, 38 years old, who is originally from the Manchester area, was presented at the magistrates' court in Westminster on Friday, and told the court he would challenge the extradition. Sources suggest that he was arrested on Thursday night.
An arrest warrant for the suspect was issued by a court in Nairobi in September. Legal prosecutors told the Kenyan court that the individual had been accused of a single count, of murder, and that the Kenyan authorities would seek his extradition to answer to accusations.
Purkiss served formerly as a army medic with the Lancaster Regiment, the infantry regiment for the north-west of England, including on deployments in Afghanistan.
Wanjiru, 21 years old, a hair stylist who had a baby daughter, went missing after a night on the town, and her body was found after two months in the grounds of the lodging where she had most recently observed.
Nobody had earlier been detained or accused in association with her demise. His detention followed a new police inquiry, which followed a exposé in the year 2021 by the Sunday Times, in which the media outlet approached several current and former soldiers in the unit.
The probe has been headed by investigators from Kenya, which, under a bilateral security treaty, maintains prosecutorial power in the matter.
