Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028
The California governor, a well-known Democratic figure, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Yes, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor stated when pressed about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."
The governor's tenure as California's leader ends in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he added.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
He has stepped forward as a high-profile adversary of the former president's team, leveraging his social media accounts and championing a proposition that would expand Democratic House seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a recent appearance on Fox News. Duffy revealed intentions to cut federal funds from the state and suggested revoking the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from California," Duffy stated, after a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that caused three deaths and casualties.
His administration noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the driver's employment multiple times, which allowed him to secure a CDL under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had previously stated he was holding back $40m from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for truck drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Team
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand national statutes," his administration said in a previous statement responding to the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate much lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations
A this month's survey found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor should run for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has grown to an mean of a third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, the governor remarked while traveling several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.
He also referenced his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The thought that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he stated. "No one can say? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
