I thought I edged it - Carey on overturned decision.

Australian gloveman Alex Carey admitted he believed he had edged the ball when he was overturned on Decision Review System during day one of the 3rd Ashes Test versus England.

Following his reprieve on 72, Carey proceeded to score a superb 106 to help the hosts post 326-8 at the stumps in the Adelaide Oval.

The Key Moment

The home side were 245-6 when Carey went for a cut to the bowling of Josh Tongue.

England appealed confidently, believing they had detected an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

Following captain Ben Stokes challenged the decision, the replay reviewed by third umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a significant spike although this registered before the ball had reached the bat.

Gaffaney also said he believed there was a space between bat and ball.

Therefore, Carey was given not out.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," commented Carey.

"If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently. There was a definite noise."

Controversial 'Snicko'

There has been debate about 'the Snickometer' during the series after a several dubious moments.

Bowling coach David Saker indicated England may pursue this latest incident further with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"So far we've let it go, but this might push us to take action," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's the situation."

Personal Milestone

Carey's century was his first in the Ashes.

It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose father passed away in recent months. Carey's wife was crying in the crowd as the batter celebrated by pointing to the heavens.

"A hundred on home soil with loved ones present is unforgettable," said Carey.

"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm fighting back the tears. But, no, it was great."

Carey has been at the centre of Ashes debate before.

He was the wicketkeeper who famously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 series, leading to a febrile final day.

Regarding the overturned decision he continued: "The sound wave didn't match up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."
