A separate possibility envisions a decline of 6C in temperature following the collapse of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and energy demand.

A Suite of Severe Conditions Possibilities
A further series of worst-case scenarios details the possible scale of severe conditions between now and the year 2100. These suggest that temperatures could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C above average, while precipitation could be 300% of typical amounts.

- Severe Heating: Planetary heating exceeding 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action collapses or if vicious cycles such as the Amazon basin perishing release its huge repository of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heatwaves and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is weakening and becoming unstable due to climate change.
