Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Jail Diary Detailing Three Weeks Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a personal account next month called A Prisoner’s Diary, which recounts his time endured in custody.

The announcement was made shortly following the former president gained freedom while his appeal proceeds the court ruling on charges of criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to acquire political financing from the regime of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in an extract, indicating the book will focus on his thoughts while in isolation instead of wider commentary of the overcrowded and troubled correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which is missing in that facility, where noise is endless commotion,” he continues. “The din unfortunately never stops. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world is fortified in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal

While appealing for release, the former leader participated remotely from a room in prison, describing his time inside as gruelling. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, displaying remarkable compassion, easing this ordeal manageable – as it truly is one.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It leaves a mark on any prisoner due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

The former president, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, set a precedent as past president from the EU and the first postwar leader of France to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he had said he planned to utilize the opportunity for authoring a memoir.

Reading Material

Unconfirmed is whether he had time to go through the texts he took into prison: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, where a blameless person is imprisoned but escapes to exact retribution.

Life in Confinement

Sarkozy was held secluded to protect him in a room approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in the city. Guards stayed in an adjacent room.

It was stated his diet consisted only yoghurts in prison worried that meals provided could have been tampered with. Although he had access for self-catering but refused this, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

The legal representative, who visited his client every day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings he would be safer outside jail than inside. “There were threats against his life, listened to yells after dark and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Legal Proceedings

Sarkozy went to prison in late October following the judiciary gave him a half-decade term for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to obtain election financing for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and has appealed against the verdict, and another court case is scheduled for next spring.
