The Australian Team Remains Cagey on Second Ashes Test Lineup, Possibility Still Ajar for Pat Cummins' Return
Australia's starting XI for the next Test match is still a mystery under 24 hours before the match start in Brisbane, with a closer look of the playing surface necessary before the hosts announce a team that could still contain Pat Cummins.
Acting Captain Smith Hints at Possibility for Shock Recall
Acting skipper Steve Smith addressed an expectant media on the eve of the Test but was keeping quiet about the precise composition of the XI. However, he did not rule out a shock return for Pat Cummins, who was forced to miss the first Test due to a back injury.
“He’s looked pretty good to me, the way he’s bowled in the nets,” the stand-in captain said. “Obviously the game is different, but he’s tracking really nicely, he knows his body well.”
Late Inclusion Remains a Possibility
The pace spearhead was originally omitted in Australia’s extended squad for the second match, but still travelled to the Gabba to continue his recovery with the team. Smith confirmed he was improving nicely and may be called up at the 11th hour.
“It's a waiting game but as stated, he’s close,” Smith continued. “His rehabilitation has been all the right things the past few days and we’ll see after three o’clock when we inspect that wicket whether he’s a possibility or not.”
Team Dilemmas Loom if Cummins Plays
A comeback for Cummins, which seemed improbable just a few days ago, would mean Perth debutant Brendan Doggett or even experienced spinner Nathan Lyon being omitted.
Smith did not assure Lyon’s place in the team when questioned about the spinner's inclusion.
“Not sure,” he responded. “We’ll look at the surface as I said and sum things up from there. This is a ground Nathan has excelled in the history, he’s a quality bowler. We will consider the choices and see how we go.”
Batters Awaiting Recall
Josh Inglis will also have to find out whether he has been selected. The batter is the prime option to come into the XI in place of the injured Usman Khawaja, with Travis Head expected to open the batting again after his heroics in the first Test.
“Several scenarios are on the table,” Smith commented. “We’ll wait and see what the pitch is like and from there we’ll finalize a final team.”
“[Inglis] is obviously a very aggressive player,” Smith added. “Did really well on his debut in the subcontinent, he’s been in excellent touch... He faces quicks exceptionally. So if he gets his opportunity I’m sure he’ll perform admirably for us.”
Final Decision Pending
In addition to Inglis, Beau Webster is in contention to earn a recall at No 6, on the assumption that Travis Head partners as opener alongside Jake Weatherald, and Cam Green shifts to No 5.
Smith said a final decision on the XI could be made before the day ends, but equally it could be delayed until the morning of the Test. The match begins at the Brisbane Cricket Ground at two in the afternoon (3pm AEDT) on Thursday.
