The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
