The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
