The Owls Receive 12-Point Deduction After Filing for Financial Insolvency
The club's supporters labeled the day as “a deeply emotional moment for the club” after the Championship side was placed into administration by owner Dejphon Chansiri and deducted 12 points.
Club Crisis Leads to Points Penalty
The Owls now face likely demotion after the EFL’s penalty left them on -6 points, 15 points from safety. Team members and employees have not been paid on time in five of the past seven months, compounding the period of turbulence.
Administrator Begbies Traynor have taken control of the process to sell Wednesday’s assets, including Hillsborough stadium, to settle outstanding debts estimated at £1m in tax. Soon after the administration announcement, seats spelling out Chansiri were removed from the North Stand.
“Administration resulted from prolonged financial issues, a lack of accountability, and unsuccessful sale attempts,” the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust said. “This isn't a moment for celebration. It needn’t have ended this way. But we're relieved the owner has departed.”
Coach's Outlook on Fresh Start
Wednesday’s manager, Henrik Pedersen held talks with administrators with team members and employees on Friday morning. The Dane said entering administration was necessary for a fresh start.
The manager emphasized “a sad situation can also still be a good day”, noting: “Recent months showed the situation was unsustainable. A reboot is needed to unlock the club's potential. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. I envision a promising future for the club.”
Employee Concerns
Employees expressed emotion at the news, as the manager explained: “There is insecurity. Will wages be paid? What happens now? Will things improve? Will it not be better? Overall, there's hope for a shared future with the club.”
Continuing Money Problems
The situation at Wednesday worsened significantly since the summer after the former manager and players left due to salary delays. The league voiced worries about the club’s finances earlier this season.
Since then, Wednesday operated with minimal funds, using any income such as solidarity payments to address liabilities. Facing potential closure orders by tax authorities, it appears Chansiri ran out of options.
Insolvency Practitioner's Comments
Kris Wigfield, one of three joint-administrators appointed by Begbies Traynor stated: “Similar to other teams, the club sustained heavy losses over multiple seasons, previously covered by the owner. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner has chosen to place the club into administration which will enable us to market the club and the stadium together, which is great news for supporters.”
Regulatory Response
Government official Lisa Nandy said Wednesday’s plight highlighted again the importance of a football regulator, recently legislated. It should be active by the 2027-28 campaign.
“Having been in this position with my own team, Wigan Athletic, I know everyone who loves the club will be hoping for a resolution as soon as possible,” Nandy said.
Supporter Actions
Supporters have boycotted the club’s retail and merchandise this season and thousands stayed away from their home fixture against Middlesbrough as part of ongoing protests. Before Oxford’s visit on Saturday, the administrator and the supporters’ trust called on fans to reengage.

Future Prospects
The trust said it expected strong interest from buyers while developing a supporter-backed purchase plan guaranteeing “even in the worst-case scenario, the threat of liquidation will not be an option”.
The manager, once an assistant, said he was not resigned to relegation despite the tough situation. “We have to be a new Sheffield Wednesday with an old heart, he stated. We have a fantastic club and it deserves to grow. I have a big belief we can survive in the Championship with this group of players. We will keep fighting
