Citizens have come together across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.
The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' representatives gathered in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A senior representative familiar with the negotiations said that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The source stated the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, because of differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are striving to narrow the differences between the both parties.
Key Matters in Discussions
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The trade of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- Post-war management of the area
Civilian Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place appears as home now and until each abducted person come back none of us will feel safe."
"Once we see all home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their backing for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to return. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to finish in return for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of Nova festival, grieving people came together to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the evening falls, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, described.
"My family are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, notably my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Health Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had accepted the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city reported two more victims had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south region, medics stated.
