That now seems to have resulted in the figure deciding to of his own accord return his titles and to surrender participation of the prestigious order.
In his announcement he said he continued to "strongly deny the allegations against me".
"In discussion with the sovereign, and my close and wider family, we have agreed the persistent claims about me take away from the duties of the King and the Royal Family," said a announcement from him.
"I have chosen, as I always have, to put my responsibility to my family and land first.
"I support my resolution five years ago to withdraw from royal engagements.
"With the King's approval, we believe I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer hold my honor or the distinctions which have been bestowed on me. As I have said previously, I strongly refute the allegations against me."
Prince Andrew has encountered a number of scandals, among them a lawsuit he resolved with Virginia Giuffre, doubts about his money matters and his association with an accused intelligence operative.
He will continue to be a prince - but will cease to be the the Duke, a title received from his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth.
The prince had already ceased to be a "participating figure" and had forfeited the use of his royal style and no longer participated at official royal events. His role now will be even more diminished.
His previous partner will be known as Ferguson and no longer the Duchess, but their offspring will continue to have the honor of royal princess.
The royal has encountered severe scrutiny over his links with disgraced financier the financier, more recently involving doubts about when he had actually ended ties.
In his television appearance, he had said that he had cut off all ties with the financier after they had been seen together in NYC in December 2010.
But messages sent in the following year later came to light implying that he had confidentially remained in communication with him, such as exchanging a communication: "Stay in contact and we'll meet again soon!"
There had been increasing annoyance in the royal household at the issues that continued to envelop the prince.
In the coming days a book released after death by the accuser will be released which is likely to bring more focus on Prince Andrew's association with Ms Giuffre and Jeffrey Epstein.
