The sentencing of pro-democracy activist and British citizen Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong has elicited global rebuke. Human rights organizations and international powers have called the security-related charges influenced by political considerations.
International Outcry and Calls for Release
The United Kingdom's foreign affairs chief Yvette Cooper remarked that the 20-year term constitutes a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She described the trial as being driven by political motives under a law intended to muzzle those who speak out against China. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and release him to his family.
“This verdict highlights how the vague and overly broad stipulations of Hong Kong’s national security legislation can be interpreted in contravention of universal rights standards,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
A European bloc official, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “deeply regrets” the conclusion of the judicial process and demanded his prompt and absolute freedom.
Background of the Case
Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered activist publication, was taken into custody four years ago the introduction of a disputed security legislation in Hong Kong. The law was enacted by Beijing in the wake of widespread unrest which Lai and his newspaper supported.
He was found guilty on counts of conspiracy to produce seditious material and conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The collusion allegations were based on the disputed legislation.

The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, called Lai the “mastermind” behind previous protests and asserted the prosecution was “justified and legal.” He called on foreign countries to refrain from intervention in the nation's domestic matters.

Organizations like Reporters Without Borders have described Lai as a figure representing declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general remarked it was a “dark day for those who value a liberty of the press.”
Given an almost 100% rate of guilty verdicts on security-related crimes, Lai’s harsh punishment is regarded as the most severe yet handed down under the disputed law.
