The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in England's Ashes Team
England have opted for a twelve-player squad just two days before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter most likely to be omitted if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted five past matches.
During these games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers remains the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some spin while also bolstering the lower order.
But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
