Venus Williams, 45, Receives Special Entry for Her Initial Australian Open in Five Years.
Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.
Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Australian Summer
Venus had earlier stated in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the start of play at the main venue.
Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my career."
Statistical Highlights
Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the main draw.
Establishing a New Record
The tournament indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
Recent Life Event
In the final days of December, Williams married Denmark-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
