The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
